Complaint The customer states the air conditioning is inoperative. Cause Confirmed the customer's complaint and found the air conditioning was inoperative. Inspected the air conditioning components, wiring and connections and found no faults. At idle with the air conditioning set to maximum cooling, observed the air conditioning compressor clutch was not engaged. Connected air conditioning gauges to the high and low service ports and found sufficient pressure for compressor operation. With the air conditioning on, used a multi-meter to check for the presence of voltage and ground at the air conditioning compressor clutch and found the specified 12 Volts was not present. Inspected the air conditioning fuse, but found no faults. Used the multi-meter to check for the presence of voltage at the input terminal of the air conditioning relay and found the specified 12 Volts was present. Removed the air conditioning relay and used the multi-meter to check for continuity across the input terminal and output terminal of the air conditioning relay. Used a set of fused jumper wires to apply external power and ground to the relay control winding and found there was no continuity across the input terminal and output terminal of the air conditioning relay. These test results verified the air conditioning relay was faulty.
Performed a visual inspection of the battery and battery terminals, but found no obvious faults. Used a multi-meter to measure the voltage across the battery terminals and found the measured voltage was below the specified range of 12.4 – 12.6 Volts. Connected a battery charger and charged the battery until the voltage returned to the specified 12.6 Volts. Used an alternator load tester to test the alternator by placing the battery under load, raised the engine speed to 2,500 RPM and found the measured alternator output was within specifications. Used a battery conductance tester to test the battery and found the battery was unable to conduct the specified amount of current, which verified it was not within specifications
